01 • Vietnam MBBS Overview

Medical Education in Vietnam

Vietnam has established public medical universities and a growing international-education ecosystem. Current WDOMS records include institutions such as Hanoi Medical University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, while other institutions have international or English-track programmes.

For an Indian student, the critical issue is not simply whether a university appears in a directory. The exact medical programme, language, duration, clinical training, internship, local authorisation/accreditation and NMC compatibility must be verified before enrolment.

02 • Why Study MBBS in Vietnam

Why Consider MBBS in Vietnam?

Established Medical Schools

Vietnam has long-established public medical universities, including Hanoi Medical University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City.

International Tracks

Some Vietnamese universities offer programmes or tracks designed for international students, including English-language options. Verify each programme individually.

Clinical Ecosystem

Major medical universities operate within large urban healthcare ecosystems, which can provide opportunities for clinical exposure subject to programme arrangements.

03 • NMC Eligibility

NMC Eligibility for Indian Students

The applicable NMC foreign medical graduate framework must be assessed before admission. The FMGL Regulations 2021 require, among other conditions, a foreign medical course of at least 54 months, English medium of instruction, prescribed subjects and other regulatory requirements for permanent registration.

Key checks

  • Indian eligibility and NEET requirements applicable to the student.
  • Exact foreign medical institution and qualification.
  • Minimum course duration under the applicable framework.
  • English medium of instruction.
  • Mandatory subjects, theory, practical and clinical training.
  • Foreign-country professional registration/licensing requirements.

Country is not the approval

Do not advertise a Vietnamese university as “NMC approved” merely because it is in Vietnam or listed in WDOMS. Verify the exact programme against the NMC framework applicable to the admission cohort.

04 — NEET Requirement

NEET Requirement

Indian applicants intending to study medicine abroad should satisfy the NEET requirement applicable to them and their admission year. NEET qualification is an Indian eligibility condition; it does not by itself certify the compliance of a foreign medical programme.

AR-MAC’S rule: Verify NEET status and the current NMC framework before submitting the final university application.

05 — NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Regulations

FMGL 2021 — Key Requirements

54 Months

The FMGL Regulations 2021 prescribe a minimum 54-month foreign medical course for the applicable cohort.

12-Month Foreign Internship

The regulations prescribe a minimum 12-month internship in the same foreign medical institution for the applicable requirement.

English Medium

The foreign medical degree programme must have English as the medium of instruction under the applicable FMGL provision.

Important: NMC rules and clarifications can evolve. This webpage is an educational planning resource and not regulatory certification.

06 • WDOMS / WFME / Vietnam Accreditation

Recognition, WDOMS & Accreditation

WDOMS provides school and programme information. Its own search portal states that listing a school does not by itself denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement.

WFME does not directly accredit medical schools. WFME recognises accrediting agencies; those agencies may then accredit medical schools/programmes under their applicable authority.

Current WDOMS examples

  • Hanoi Medical University: currently operational public medical school; WDOMS shows multiple medical programmes.
  • University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City: currently operational public school, established in 1947.
  • Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City School of Medicine: WDOMS currently records six-year Vietnamese and a 4.5-year Vietnamese pathway.
  • Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy: official 2026 admission information lists a “Y khoa (tiếng Anh)” track for foreigners and its 2025–26 notice states VND 119.9 million/year for the international English programme.

Accreditation caution

WFME’s current country page identifies Viet Nam National University–Ho Chi Minh City, Center for Education Accreditation as an agency applying in the WFME recognition programme. That is not the same as WFME Recognition Status. Verify the specific accreditation status and validity period of each programme.

10 • University-wise Tuition Fees

Tuition Fees — 2027–28 Verification Required

Vietnamese tuition is normally quoted in Vietnamese Dong and may be set by institution, programme and student category. Do not publish one country-wide MBBS fee.

Never pay based on an advertisement alone. Request the university’s official fee notice/contract, refund policy and complete payment schedule.

11 — 6-Year Total Cost

Build a Realistic 6-Year Budget

Tuition

Annual tuition × actual programme duration, adjusted for any published annual increase.

Living

Hostel/private accommodation, food, transport, utilities, books and personal expenses.

International

Visa, immigration/registration, insurance, flights, document processing and contingency reserve.

Formula: 6-year academic cost + 6-year living cost + immigration/travel + academic extras + contingency. Recalculate every academic year.

12 • Hostel & Food Costs

Hostel, Food & Living Budget

Costs vary by city and accommodation type. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi may have different living patterns from smaller cities such as Can Tho.

Hostel

Confirm annual room fee, occupancy, deposit, utilities, curfew, facilities and availability.

Food

Plan a monthly food allowance based on canteen, self-catering and local meal costs.

Transport

Include daily campus travel and clinical-hospital commuting where applicable.

13 • Visa & TRC

Student Visa & Temporary Residence

International students must follow Vietnam’s immigration rules and the university’s sponsorship/registration procedures. The exact student visa category, invitation/sponsorship, entry formalities and temporary residence documentation should be confirmed with the university and Vietnamese immigration authorities for the student’s nationality and intake.

01

Receive official admission/confirmation documentation.

02

Complete the university's international-student/visa sponsorship process.

03

Apply for the appropriate visa/entry documentation where required.

04

After arrival, complete university and local immigration/temporary residence formalities within the required period.

16 — Curriculum / Syllabus

Curriculum & Medical Training

Vietnamese medicine programmes generally progress from basic sciences to pre-clinical and clinical education, but exact structure varies by university. The official Nam Can Tho International Medicine page, for example, describes a six-year, 191-credit programme and an internationally oriented curriculum.

Basic Sciences

Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, microbiology and related foundations.

Medical Sciences

Pathology, pharmacology, immunology and related pre-clinical disciplines.

Clinical Medicine

Medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology and other clinical disciplines according to the university curriculum.

Request the official year-wise syllabus, credits/contact hours and clinical rotation plan before signing the final admission contract.

17 — Clinical Training

Clinical Training & Hospital Exposure

Clinical training must be examined carefully for Indian students. Confirm teaching hospitals, clinical departments, patient exposure, supervised training, clinical hours, attendance and the language used in patient interaction.

Verify

  • Names/status of teaching hospitals
  • Clinical rotation schedule
  • Patient-facing training
  • Clinical attendance requirements
  • Assessment and logbook system

Language Matters

A programme can be advertised as English-medium while patient interaction may occur in Vietnamese. Ask exactly how language training and patient communication are handled during clinical years.

18 — Internship Requirements

Internship & Clinical Completion

Do not assume that the programme’s headline duration automatically satisfies NMC requirements. Obtain written details of internship location, duration, supervision, patient exposure and whether it occurs within the same foreign medical institution as required by the applicable FMGL framework.

Critical NMC check: The FMGL Regulations 2021 specify a minimum 12-month internship in the same foreign medical institution for the applicable cohort. Verify the actual Vietnamese university arrangement before admission.

19 • FMGE / NExT Pathway

FMGE / NExT Planning

Indian graduates of foreign medical programmes must follow the licensing and registration pathway applicable to their admission/graduation cohort. NMC’s current regulatory framework includes FMGL 2021 and related updates.

During MBBS

Build strong basic-science and clinical foundations; keep complete academic and clinical records.

Before Graduation

Verify degree, transcript, internship and licensing documentation and review the latest Indian regulatory requirements.

After Graduation

Follow the examination, internship and registration requirements that apply at that time.

21 — Scholarships

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships vary by institution and student category. Ask for official international-student scholarship rules, academic thresholds, continuation conditions and whether medical students are eligible.

What to verify

Full/partial tuition waiver • accommodation support • renewal criteria • nationality eligibility • academic performance conditions • application deadline.

22 • Education Loans

Education Loan Planning

Indian students may investigate education loans from banks/NBFCs subject to lender policy. Before borrowing, prepare the official admission letter, fee schedule, programme details and full six-year financial model.

Documents

Admission letter, fee schedule, academic records, passport and financial documents.

Compare

Interest rate, processing fee, collateral, moratorium, insurance and repayment terms.

Stress Test

Model currency fluctuations and annual fee/living-cost increases before accepting a large loan.

23 — Accommodation

Accommodation Options

University Hostel

Check room occupancy, facilities, security, curfew, meals, utilities and availability.

Private Housing

Confirm lease conditions, local registration, deposit, utilities and commute.

Clinical Location

Consider travel time between academic campus, hostel and teaching hospitals.

24 • Safety & Student Life

Safety, Support & Student Life

Students should follow university safety guidance, Vietnamese law, immigration requirements and current government travel advisories. Evaluate campus security, accommodation, healthcare access, emergency contacts and student support before travel.

Student Experience

Vietnam offers a distinct Southeast Asian cultural environment, urban campuses and international-student communities, but experiences vary by university and city.

Emergency Preparation

Keep university emergency contacts, insurance details, passport copies and relevant consular information accessible.

25 — Climate

Climate in Vietnam

Vietnam’s climate varies substantially by region. Northern Vietnam has cooler winters and hot summers, while southern areas are generally warmer year-round with pronounced wet/dry seasonal patterns. Pack and plan accommodation according to the university city.

26 — Advantages & Disadvantages

A Balanced Decision

Potential Advantages

  • Established public medical universities.
  • International/English medicine pathways at selected institutions.
  • Large urban healthcare ecosystems.
  • Strong cultural and international exposure.
  • Multiple cities and institutions to compare.

Potential Challenges

  • Many programmes are Vietnamese-medium; English must be verified at programme level.
  • Patient communication may require Vietnamese.
  • International medical programmes can differ substantially in structure.
  • Fees/intakes change and must be verified.
  • Indian licensing requirements must be considered from the start.

27 • Career After MBBS

Career Pathways

India

Follow the applicable FMG examination, internship and registration pathway.

Vietnam

Practice is subject to Vietnamese professional licensing and registration rules.

Other Countries

Each destination has its own licensing examinations and eligibility requirements.

28 — PG Opportunities

Postgraduate Opportunities

After MBBS, graduates may explore postgraduate education in India, Vietnam or other countries, subject to each jurisdiction’s licensing, examination and eligibility rules.

Choose undergraduate medicine for its quality and regulatory fit first. Do not select a university solely because an agent promises a particular future PG destination.
