2027 planning note:

The supplied source contains repeated and older descriptions. This page uses current DET information available from Duolingo as of September 2026. University acceptance, minimum scores, fees and visa use are institution- and country-specific and must be checked for the exact application.

01 / OVERVIEW

A digital-first English proficiency test built around real language skills.

The Duolingo English Test (DET) assesses Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking through a computer-adaptive experience. Duolingo describes the test as an online, remotely proctored assessment that can be taken from home when the candidate meets the technical and testing-environment requirements.

01 / DIGITAL

Take It Online

No traditional test-centre appointment is required. Your testing environment must meet DET rules.

02 / ADAPTIVE

Questions Adapt

The graded assessment changes difficulty according to your performance, helping measure proficiency efficiently.

03 / GLOBAL

University Acceptance

DET is accepted by many institutions worldwide, but acceptance and required scores always vary by program.

02 • Registration

Register online, prepare your environment, then test when ready.

The exact price shown at checkout can vary by market and current Duolingo policy. Do not rely on the old US$59 figure in the supplied source without checking the live DET registration page.

Create Account

Register through the official Duolingo English Test platform and complete your profile.

Purchase Test

Review the current price and purchase options displayed for your country.

Prepare Setup

Check your computer, camera, microphone, phone and testing room against current requirements.

Take & Certify

Complete the test and wait for certification and score reporting.

03 • Eligibility

There is no academic degree prerequisite for taking the DET.

The DET is an English proficiency assessment rather than an academic entrance exam. Your university, program, scholarship or immigration pathway may separately define the English score you need.

Academic Qualification

Duolingo does not require an academic degree as a prerequisite for taking the English test.

Age & Consent

Young test takers are subject to current DET age and parental-consent rules. Verify the rule that applies to your age at registration.

Identity

You must use an acceptable identification document and satisfy the identity-verification process.

Technical Readiness

A compatible computer, camera, microphone, speakers, phone and reliable internet connection are central to the home-testing setup.

Testing Environment

You must follow the current room, privacy, device and security rules. Violations can affect certification.

Institutional Eligibility

Taking DET does not mean every university or visa authority accepts it. Confirm your target institution’s current policy.

04 • Exam Pattern

One adaptive experience. Four core language skills.

The DET is designed to assess English proficiency through a mixture of adaptive graded tasks and ungraded open-ended samples. Duolingo’s current materials describe the overall experience as about one hour.

Adaptive by Design

Question difficulty responds to performance rather than following one fixed paper for every candidate.

Interactive Skills

Modern DET tasks increasingly measure language through integrated, real-world communication.

Samples Matter

Although ungraded, the open-ended writing and speaking samples can be shared with institutions.

05 • Exam Syllabus

Prepare the four skills — plus the task types that activate them.

The exact item mix can vary because the DET is adaptive. Rather than memorising a fixed old-style question count, candidates should build proficiency across these areas.

Reading

Vocabulary in context, reading for gist, locating information, inference, text organisation and comprehension. Current DET research describes Interactive Reading, Vocabulary in Context and Yes/No Vocabulary among its reading evidence.

Writing

Clear, coherent written responses, vocabulary, grammar, organisation and development. Interactive Writing is part of the evolving DET task ecosystem.

Listening

Understanding spoken language in real time, retaining information, interpreting meaning and responding appropriately. Current DET research highlights the cognitive demands of listening.

Speaking

Picture description, extended speaking, speaking sample and interactive speaking are among the current speaking task families described by Duolingo.

Interactive Listening

Listen and participate in a simulated conversation, then demonstrate comprehension and language production through follow-up tasks.

Academic Communication

Train to understand instructions, explain ideas, infer meaning, summarise information and communicate naturally under time pressure.

06 • Result Statistics

DET scores run from 10 to 160 — in five-point increments.

Duolingo currently reports an Overall Score plus individual Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking subscores. It also reports integrated subscores: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production.

07 • Exam Date

There is no traditional annual DET exam calendar.

Because the DET is delivered online on demand, candidates can generally schedule the test according to their own application timeline, subject to current purchase and test-window rules. Do not confuse “on demand” with “no deadline”: university application deadlines still matter.

Step 01

Map Applications

Record university deadlines, scholarship deadlines and document-submission dates.

Step 02

Set Target Score

Check the exact minimum and recommended DET score for every target program.

Step 03

Test With Buffer

Take the exam early enough to allow certification, score sharing and a possible retake.

Step 04

Share Strategically

Send your certified result to institutions that explicitly accept DET for your purpose.

08 • Test Centres & Home Setup

Your home becomes the test environment.

Unlike IELTS or TOEFL test-centre models, the DET is designed for remote testing. There is therefore no conventional state-wise test-centre list to publish.

Computer Checklist

✓ Compatible computer with working camera and microphone
✓ Reliable internet connection
✓ Required browser/software and current system setup
✓ Phone available when required for the security setup

Room Checklist

✓ Private, quiet and compliant testing space
✓ Clear desk and permitted materials only

09 • Score Planning

Use CEFR as a planning reference — not as a universal admission cutoff.

Duolingo’s published CEFR alignment places B1 at 60–95, B2 at 100–125, C1 at 130–150 and C2 at 155–160. Individual universities may require very different scores, so institutional requirements remain decisive.

60–95 • B1

Developing independent English proficiency. Often below the requirements of many competitive degree programs.

100–125 • B2

Upper-intermediate range. Check program-specific requirements before treating this as sufficient.

130–150 • C1

Advanced range. Can be competitive for many academic contexts, subject to each institution's policy.

155–160 • C2

Highest CEFR-aligned range published by Duolingo. Still, admission decisions consider the complete application.

10 • 60-Day Preparation Roadmap

Train for proficiency, then train for the adaptive test.

Days 1–10 • Diagnose

Take official practice material, identify weak skills and benchmark your current score.

Days 11–30 • Build

Strengthen vocabulary, grammar, reading speed, listening comprehension and speaking fluency.

Days 31–45 • Integrate

Practice picture description, interactive tasks, extended responses and timed writing.

Days 46–60 • Simulate

Run full practice sessions, refine your home setup and eliminate recurring timing mistakes.
