01 / OVERVIEW

A fast, computer-based English test for global study, work and migration pathways.

PTE Academic is a computer-based English language test assessing speaking, writing, reading and listening. Pearson currently describes it as a single approximately two-hour test, with results typically available within two days. It is accepted by 4,000+ universities and colleges worldwide and is used in relevant work and migration pathways in countries including Australia and New Zealand.

01 / FOUR SKILLS

Integrated English

Tasks can assess more than one communicative skill, reflecting how English is used in academic and real-world contexts.

02 / COMPUTER

Digital Test Experience

Speaking, writing, reading and listening are completed through a computer-based test-centre experience.

03 / FAST RESULTS

Typically in 2 Days

Pearson says results are typically available within 48 hours, with results no later than five days under its stated service information.

02 • Registration

Register around your application deadline, not just your preferred test date.

PTE registration is completed through Pearson’s PTE system. Candidates should create/check their account details, select the appropriate test, find an available test centre/date and complete payment. Identity information must match the applicable identification requirements.

Create / Access myPTE

Use your Pearson PTE account to begin the booking journey.

Select Test

Choose the PTE test that matches your academic, work, visa or migration purpose.

Choose Centre & Date

Availability varies by location, so search early around your deadlines.

Confirm & Prepare

Complete payment, review the appointment and prepare the required ID for test day.

03 • Eligibility

No academic qualification requirement from Pearson — but age and purpose rules matter.

Pearson’s PTE Academic materials describe the test for adult learners and indicate that candidates aged 16–17 can take it with parental consent. Universities, governments, employers and professional bodies may impose their own requirements.

Age 18+

Adults can take PTE Academic without parental consent under the general test framework.

Age 16–17

Parental consent is required according to Pearson’s current PTE Academic information.

Academic Qualification

Pearson does not prescribe a minimum school or university qualification merely to sit the test. Your destination institution may require specific qualifications.

Identification

Bring acceptable identification according to the current rules for your test and location. Passport requirements can apply.

Destination Rules

A score that works for one university or visa route may not automatically satisfy another. Check the exact requirement.

Test Choice

PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core serve different purposes. Select the correct test for your pathway.

04 • Exam Pattern

The current PTE Academic is organised into three integrated parts.

Pearson’s current PTE Academic format contains three parts and approximately two hours of testing. The current format includes nine Speaking & Writing question types, five Reading question types and eight Listening question types.

2025 update

Two new Speaking & Writing question types — Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation — apply to tests taken after 7 August 2025.

Scoring

Different task types use correctness or partial-credit approaches; some tasks also evaluate content and enabling skills.

Human review

Pearson states that selected complex tasks include human expert review of content before finalisation.

05 • Exam Syllabus

Know every task type — because PTE rewards task-specific execution.

Speaking & Writing

Personal Introduction • Read Aloud • Repeat Sentence • Describe Image • Retell Lecture • Answer Short Question • Summarize Group Discussion • Respond to a Situation • Summarize Written Text • Write Essay. Personal Introduction is for familiarisation and does not contribute to the score.

Reading

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers • Reorder Paragraph • Fill in the Blanks • Multiple Choice, Single Answer. Integrated skills mean some reading tasks also assess writing.

Listening

Summarize Spoken Text • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers • Fill in the Blanks • Highlight Correct Summary • Multiple Choice, Single Answer • Select Missing Word • Highlight Incorrect Words • Write from Dictation.

06 • Result Statistics & Scoring

Your PTE score is reported on the Global Scale of English.

PTE Academic reports an overall score from 10 to 90, together with communicative-skills scores and a Skills Profile. Pearson states that results are typically available within 48 hours.

TYPICAL RESULTS

Speaking

Pronunciation and oral fluency can contribute to performance on relevant speaking tasks, alongside content and task-specific traits.

Writing

Relevant tasks can consider content, form and language quality. Some complex responses receive human content review.

Integrated Skills

Some tasks contribute to more than one communicative skill, so practising isolated sections alone is not enough.

07 • Exam Date

PTE is offered frequently — but the best date is the one that protects your deadline.

Pearson describes PTE Academic as having frequent test dates throughout the year. Exact availability is centre-specific and should be checked through Pearson’s booking system for 2027.

Step 01

Find your deadline

Record university, scholarship, visa and professional-registration deadlines.

Step 02

Check accepted test

Confirm PTE Academic or the specific PTE variant accepted by your destination.

Step 03

Book early

Choose a date that leaves time for results and a possible retake.

Step 04

Track your result

Use your myPTE account and share scores with institutions as required.

08 • Test Centers

Search the centre network before you lock your application timeline.

Pearson’s current PTE information describes a global network of test centres. Availability, locations and appointment times vary by market, so an old static list should not be treated as a 2027 centre directory.

India — Planning Strategy

✓ Search the official Pearson centre finder for your preferred city.
✓ Compare available dates before paying.
✓ Keep a second nearby city as a contingency if deadlines are tight.
✓ Confirm ID requirements before test day.

Global Test Access

✓ PTE is delivered through authorised test-centre infrastructure.
✓ Availability varies by country and test type.
✓ Visa/migration requirements can differ from university requirements.
✓ Always verify acceptance with the final institution or authority.

09 • 60–90 Day Preparation Roadmap

Build speed, accuracy, fluency and task control together.

Week 1–2 • Diagnose

Take an official-style baseline and identify task-level weaknesses.

Week 3–5 • Build

Train pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar, vocabulary, reading speed and listening retention.

Week 6–9 • Integrate

Practise integrated tasks and the newer question types under realistic timing.

Final 2 Weeks • Simulate

Run full mock tests, analyse errors, stabilise pacing and prepare test-day logistics.

10 • Global Admissions Strategy

Choose the score target from the destination — not from a generic chart.

Australia

Check the exact university/course requirement and, separately, any visa or migration English requirement that applies to your pathway.

New Zealand

Verify the institution and relevant immigration rules before relying on a particular score.

United Kingdom

PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI serve different purposes. Confirm which test your course or visa route requires.

Canada

University and immigration pathways may use different tests and thresholds. Check the exact programme and authority.

United States

PTE Academic is accepted by many institutions, but acceptance and minimum scores remain programme-specific.

Score Sharing

Pearson provides digital score reporting and score sharing through the candidate account.
